She sells shiso by the seashore... I haven't even talked about the wonderful cards from mythicsagefire/cat and all, or the incredible gift of love from sysotree's little ones. Thank you all :) The kitty in the wheelchair is just about the most precious gift I've ever gotten (the ones from my love darona hold the most special place in my heart)-but oooo a kitty with her own wheelchair and her own little pink shoes that the five year olds insisted I needed!!! I needed. Thanks.
But what I am writing about is another gripe. I HATE shiso. Shiso is the most miserable, awful, most disgustingly nasty plant in existence. It is also the most favorite herb in Japan (in the states, if you go to a REALLY fancy Japanese restaurant and you get a leaf that has serrated edges and looks a little like catnip--that is shiso). Shiso in Japan is in everything, on every plate at every meal. And I am violently allergic to it. If I eat it, I vomit for days. If I smell it, I choke. If I touch it, my hand swells up and I feel like I am grasping burning nettles.
Luckily, I told myself for lo these 20 years, it does NOT exist in the states. So when I saw some pretty catnip growing in our garden, shiso didn't even enter my mind. It was only after I broke it up for the cat--getting it all over my hand--and my hand started to burn and swell did I think: Shiso???? Shiso?!?!?!?! Shiso!!!!!!!!!!
How the @!#$#$%^%$ did it get into my garden? (If any of you had anything to do with it--which I am sure would never have crossed anyone's mind--and I would never accuse anyone of such a heinous crime--never ever tell me.) It is in the mint family, and pretty much only grows by roots. I had not planted anything in that corner of the garden in the last few years as it is pretty well planted with older perennials. I have watered and weeded--and never saw that shiso plant until now. And it really is not grown in the US.
I guess I have to get over the entirely baffling part of how it got here. I guess when you have a dragon in your backyard you don't keep asking how it got there, you just deal with it. Any ideas on getting rid of it? Our garden is STRICTLY organic (by our preference and the landlady's orders.) Since shiso is in the mint family, it is virtually impossible to kill. My love tore it out by the roots, but you guys know mints... Any ideas?
My hand is still swollen. I'm takng two benedrills and going to bed! | | Friday, April 11th, 2008 | | 9:37 pm |
Does anyone have Wednesday's Denver Post??? Help. I forgot to get the paper, and it had my letter about Simm's Landing in it. Does anyone still have a copy? I'd like it for my scrap book.

Dear Westword OK People. I WANT ANSWERS. Where do I send this???
Dear Editor,
I would greatly appreciate it if you would note which restaurant are not handicapped accessible. It is really an angry, humiliating moment to go to a restaurant and not be able to get in. I am in a wheelchair, and I rarely eat out. But I expect to have the same rights as everyone else. I don't. I went to Simms Landing for a dinner with my union group, and could not get in. They had only 2 handicapped spaces--if you did not get one, you have to go up a 15 degree slope. Then they have no ramps--even in places where it would be easy to put a ramp.
I was humiliated and disappointed. And I was unable to attend my dinner.
Why, in this day and age, do we still shut out people?

I hit send too quickly. And I thought about this too late. Could someone respond to this letter by saying: "No society that has totally embraced homosexuality has lasted for more than, you know, a few decades." A fact check is needed here. Just off the top of my head: Greeks, Romans, many Native American tribes held sway for several centuries. Please?? for me?? Go to http://www.hrcactioncenter.org/campaign/ok_rep_sally_kern_cen/x87sii74l7bewkjj? as another user. Dear Deena, "I honestly think it's the biggest threat our nation has, even more so than terrorism or Islam." That's from an Oklahoma lawmaker's speech about gay people. You heard right. A secret recording has just emerged of State Rep. Sally Kern speaking to a Republican group in January, where she equates both sexual orientation and religion with terrorism. She thought no one was listening. Now hundreds of thousands are. And despite her refusal to apologize, we won't let her get away with this. Tell Oklahoma's governor and top legislators to publicly denounce Kern's remarks. This recording, first released in a video by the Gay and Lesbian Victory Fund, is all the more troubling given the recent spate of hate violence against gay and transgender youth. Last month in California, a 15-year-old boy, Lawrence King, who suffered taunting and bullying by his classmates because of his sexual orientation, was killed by one of those classmates – a 14-year-old boy. The week after Lawrence King's death saw the murder of another teen, this time a 17-year-old transgender youth in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Words matter. Especially words from elected officials. Rep. Kern's private feelings towards homosexuality and Islam are one thing. But public statements that encourage disrespect or violence towards those with whom she disagrees are completely unacceptable. Write to Oklahoma's leaders immediately and tell them Kern's remarks must not be tolerated. Here are a few more completely unfounded claims from her speech: "The homosexual agenda is destroying this nation." "No society that has totally embraced homosexuality has lasted for more than, you know, a few decades." "What's happening now is they're going after, in schools, two-year-olds." Kern must be held responsible. Please send this message to your friends and ask them to join you in taking action | | 1:06 pm |

Getting better and worse I'm getting better--I haven't sneezed all day. I think I can make it into the office tomorrow.
Myra's been quite ill and is in intensive care--she was on life support for a while. I just railed against this torture--she's 90, her life is mostly sitting around waiting to die when she is healthy. And now she is so ill and the medical establishment is just bound and determined to keep her alive. (It is so weird. The nurses completely ignored her when she was in the ER, but now that she is in ICU, her life actually matters to them...)
I hadn't talked to Myra about death and dying--and her living will states she will be on the ventilators for 21 days. Arrgh. WHY don't people accept that death is a part of life? Why do we spend so much time--and money--prolonging life at any cost--even when people are going through hell on earth?
For me, it just isn't worth it. I figure I am on borrowed time anyway--without medical advances of the last half century I would be dead about 10 times over by now. So why bother to stretch it out to the last possible second--especially if that just means going through more pain and hassle? I have a DNR in place, and my love knows I don't want this foolishness--even if it means I can live for a couple more years.
But what about you guys? Do you want life at any cost? What does quality of life mean to you? | | Saturday, February 23rd, 2008 | | 3:57 pm |
PS I took the flu test on Monday, they said it would be back Wed, and it STILL is not back. Nonetheless, QED, we have been caught up in the epidemic of flu not covered by the flu shot. | | 3:48 pm |
Down and out We've been ill with the flu for the last week--last Friday I went to see a 90 year old friend of ours in the hospital--she had both kinds of flu not covered by the flu shot. She picked it up on her last visit to the ER, for high blood pressure. She was stuck in the emergency room for over 30 hours this time--the flu epidemic ensured that every hospital in Denver was on divert and every bed filled. So I stayed with her for 11 hours to make sure she got into a room and was ok. She was confused, upset, and no one in the ER cared because she was breathing.
Then Sunday I felt ill, and we knew what it was. We got me to the doctor and because I am a high risk category I got the prized Tamiflu. Darona my love came tumbling after on Monday. But when she called Kaiser, they said she wasn't in a high risk category, so she got bupkiss. I read the label on the tamiflu--it is supposed to shrink your flu from 4 days to 3. WELL...this is the 6th day for both of us. We are still feverish, exhausted, sneezing, aching in weird places, and totally down for the count. The Tamiflu didn't lessen my symptoms much --or at least I was just as ill as my love. However, the great part is that I threw up twice--and both times did not throw up a second time. HOORAY!!! I can actually vomit and not start a trend of vomiting my guts out over and over again and then having to go to the hospital so they can put my guts in again!!!! HAPPY!!!.
Still, this illness puts both of us back a few pegs. I feel like the monopoly game where I never go past Go, I never collect my $200 paycheck, and I just go directly back to...bed. Lucky we aren't going to jail....

What to call the evil empire? My love and I (as well as others) have been talking politics and trying to figure out what the people behind Bush (the people using Bush as a figurehead to sack Iraq, get trillions of dollars in their pockets, tie up world oil, etc. etc.) are doing. But describing who they are gets tiresome. So I've come up with a term:
Malarchy. This is the same as malarky, only serious. | | Friday, February 8th, 2008 | | 8:37 pm |
Now I'm even scareder... TO: Interested Parties FROM: VoteVets.org RE: Senator McCain's Real Record on the War in Iraq DATE: February 8, 2008 ---------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------- Senator John McCain presents himself as a maverick and a critic of the Iraq war. But a close read of his record indicates that his position on the Iraq war has consistently matched President George W. Bush's. ( Read more... ) |
