MaJe Signs
posted by Deena Larsen, Saturday, July 2, 2011, 2:15 PM FRIDAY JULY 15--not Saturday. OOOPS. Passing on MaJe's lessons. posted by Deena Larsen, Friday, July 1, 2011, 12:00 PM Boy, I tell you. Without MaJe in my life it is amazing that anything gets done. Also, this is a good time to tell you that I have not checked voice mail since October 2010... so if you really want to talk to me, email me. I am mostly good with email... I have just learned to text, so that is ok too. And if I didn't respond--it's not cause I don't love you all--I do. It's just I don't have an organizing factor in my life anymore... MaJe and I developed ways to communicate, which got us through some really tough times... and now I have a chance to pass that on. So please let your friends know about this free event I will be presenting this at 7:00 pm FRIDAY JULY 15 at the Unitarian church (14th and Lafayette) for the Hearthstone Church. ===Umpire signals for your life You want to just complain about your boss and get it off your chest. Your partner wants to solve the problem and can't understand why you are still mad. You want to celebrate something wonderful and your partner is down in the dumps over something else. And your mood collapses. This can lead to huge fights. Then as you fight you get angrier and angrier. And you feel you can't just back off. So you say something you will regret later. And the cycle leads onwards to more and more trouble. What if there were a better way? What if your family could use a simple set of “game rulesâ€ and “umpire signalsâ€ to explain exactly what you need—”and to understand exactly what your partner, your kids, your parents, your friends, etc. need? Then you would be "clued in" and be able to give (and receive) what is needed without resorting to a "clue by four." Imagine being able to communicate with your family clearly and lovingly. This ritual will go through a set of umpire signals and teach you a new method of identifying problem areas in your communication (before they lead to fights and hard feelings). But more than that, we will "power up" communication paths, open the channels of love and understanding to build a solid "soul foundation" to use these new tools. This ritual is designed for your whole family--whoever you define as your true, loving, supportive family. So bring your kids, bring your friends, bring the people you *love* the most. (As the little ones can get a bit bored with all this talk, please bring their favorite "noiseless" toys--and we will have an "activity area" within the circle where they can play or draw relatively quietly.) Please note that this ritual will be as ecumenical as possible, and that we will respect all points of view. Thus, this is one you can bring everyone to--without worrying about their particular religious fervor. So, bring the whole family, whatever "family" means the most to you. Proposals for ELO-AI at Brown in June
Proposals for the Arts Program which will focus on installable work. Submit a description and or artist's statement - totaling about 300 words, 500 word maximum - and include a brief bio (indicating affiliation, if any). Installable work: The Royal Nonsuch The essence of literature is communication and social interactions. This installation explores how that essence changes through the new modes of social media and electronic literature. Before the conference, a new social media “figure” of the Royal Nonsuch would be announced. Conference participants would be invited to friend this figure on social media sites (e.g., LiveJournal, Facebook, Twitter, Myspace)—and thus interact with other conferencees in an online environment to discuss issues relevant to archiving and eliterature. A “where are they now?” feature will help “archive” people. During the conference, a physical installation will consist of printed selections from these interactions, comfy chairs, and two computers for a Browsing Show. Online, folks will have a virtual tour with links to sites of relevance to the conference themes. Sites will include archives from Deena Larsen, Stephanie Strickland, Michael Joyce, and others. Browsers will visit some older collections (e.g., the “Progressive Dinner Party” and “Jumpin' at the Diner”) with links to newer works, the ELO Directory, ELC 2 and other resources. We will “staff” the installation at preannounced times and be on hand with tea and cakes to facilitate in-person social interactions. At unstaffed times, pen and paper will be available to simulate what prehistoric/predigital conferences termed “the Notice Board.” After the conference, the Royal Nonsuch presence on social media sites would remain. This pre-during-and post-conference installation would be an archival instance of networking across media. The entire exploration would thus foster uncovering the innate differences in communication media between pen and paper, humans and teacups, and text and electrons. Deena Larsen has played with communication structures inherent in hypertext/elit/new media/whatchamacallit since the 1980s from her MA thesis on Hypertext and Hyperpossibilities. http://www.deenalarsen.netMarjorie Coverley Luesebrink writes hypermedia fiction as M.D. Coverley. Her full- length, interactive, electronic novel, Califia is at Eastgate Systems. Her most recent work is Egypt: The Book of Going Forth by Day (2006). Coverley has written numerous works and articles for online journals. She’s a member of the Board of Directors of the ELO. http://califia.usDiana Slattery’s an electronic performance artist using digital tools to write in a three-dimensional constructed language “Glide” http://www.academy.rpi.edu/glide/. She’s working on a thesis for the University of Plymouth, UK on psychedelics and language. Jill Walker Rettberg, Associate Professor of Digital Culture at the University of Bergen, researches narratives in social media and published the book “Blogging” in 2008. Her research blog has been going strong since 2000. http://jilltxt.net/?p=2455Bill Bly’s the author of We Decend, Eastgate—the first interactive work based on archives and is working on volume 2. http://www.eastgate.com/catalog/WeDescend.htmlJulianne Chatelain has worked with interactive information in the corporate world since 1979, to improve readability / usability / playability. She has written about authors' and readers' use of hypertext and copyright issues related to collaboration. Stephanie Strickland’s the author of many collaborative elit works, including True North, V: Vniverse, slippingglimpse, and her archive is at Duke University. http://www.stephaniestrickland.com/ Alternative, innovative proposals through which we will attempt to diversify the format of the conference. Submit a description of about 300 words, 500 word maximum. See Spot Link. Link Spot Link. While e-books provide a wonderful new scope for reading, people often conflate these text-only pieces with electronic literature. Eliterature uses one or more electronic elements as an integral, semantic part of the work. These elements (e.g., sound, navigation, imagery, movement) are not simply embellishments but form a crucial part of the whole—so much so that you can’t read the work without understanding these rhetorical devices. Eliterature needs a stronger community base in order to survive—as no literature can thrive for long without a knowledgeable, “hip” audience. To help introduce eliterature and to show the significance of these rhetorical devices as a new genre of literature to the Brown University as a whole, I would provide a free, one-hour lecturer before the conference that would introduce the community to true eliterature. The lecture would focus on several short pieces (e.g., Rob Kendall’s Faith, Peter Howard’s Rainbow Factory, MD Coverley’s Endless Suburbs, Deena Larsen’s I’m Simply Saying). These pieces would be examined semantically to explain how electronic rhetorical elements are integral to the piece’s meaning. Note that this would be an adjunct event, designed for local outreach and to get members of Brown University aware of and involved in electronic literature. People would be able to enter on a first come, first served basis. However, the suggested criterion for being an audience member is to have read 5 or fewer pieces of electronic literature. There would be announcements to the community (I would work with Brown to issue a press release/invitation to local news papers, invite the English Department to participate, and to provide flyers on Brown University and the Rhode Island School of Design campus. This publication would help introduce—and spark interest in--the Electronic Literature Organization (ELO) conference to the community). Deena Larsen has given numerous workshops that delve into the very bones of eliterature, examining the simpler relationships between text, link, sound, and image to provide a foundation for more complex e-rhetorics. Her new textbook, Fun damentals, provides basic explanations of these rhetorical devices <http://www.deenalarsen.net/fundamentals/index.html>. She has written many electronic works and articles and served as a member of the Board of ELO and trAce. If Deena is unable to attend, then Marjorie Luesebrink would provide the lecture. | | Friday, December 11th, 2009 | | 6:01 pm |

WARNING--this was not on google.
Passing on stuff not googleized for urban legends. Subject: RE: Turkeys and Grocery savings for those among us who are hungry [this information comes to me via two churchs and friends at DFAS] Be sure to let your friends and family know about this great deal! Hello Friends, During these tough economic times, I want to tell you about a place where you can save on your grocery bill. It is called "Loving Hands." It is located at 601 Sedalia Way (6th Ave. and Sedalia Way just east of Airport blvd). For $50 cash, you can purchase about $200 of groceries. They are only open on Thursdays from 9am-12 noon for this program. I believe they have a free day for low income, homeless, etc. on other days. So for this program, they only ask how many are in your home but they don't care about the income. I was told to come about 8 am to get in line, they give you a number and a sticker that indicates how many of certain items you get and a ticket for frozen food. They will call you when you can go in to shop. There are several sections and each section has a list of things you can get. There is a fresh fruit and vegetable section ( I got 3 cucumbers, 10 huge tomatoes, a produce bag of mushrooms, a huge bag of green beans, 3 bundles of green onions, fresh raspberries, 5 apples, 6 potatoes), the frozen section I got 4 items (chicken breast tenders, hot wings, frozen vegetables, steaks), the bread section you can choose something like 3 bags of English muffins, 5 loaves of bread, 3 bags of rolls, 1 package of tortillas, 5 sweet treats like Twinkies/muffins, and 2 hotdog or hamburger buns. Then there are canned food sections, dry goods sections, cleaning supplies, paper supplies, a section on toothpaste, shampoo, soap, razors, shaving cream, etc. Each section has limits but quite a bit to choose from. I hope this helps you out or else send it on to someone who can use it. By the way, you get extra items if you bring a friend. | | 11:03 am |

How do you respond to someoen misusing words?
PROBLEM: On Tuesday, State Sen. Dave Schultheis, Republican from Colorado Springs, compared President Obama to the terrorists on 9/11. Schultheis tweeted this: "Don't for a second, think Obama wants what is best for U.S. He is flying the U.S. Plane right into the ground at full speed. Let's Roll." As reported in today's Denver Post, Ed Kowalski, a director for the New York-based 9/11 Families for a Secure America, said Schultheis was "clearly" referring to United Flight 93, the plane that hijackers flew into the ground on 9/11. (Denver Post 11/12/09). "Let's roll" were reportedly the last words from one of the passengers just before they attempted to storm the cockpit. Schultheis claims in today's Post that he wasn't referring to United Flight 93 and comparing President Obama to Al Qaida terrorists. But that's baloney, and we all know it. If we don't respond and condemn this kind of thing, then we condone it with our silence. So speak out. Click below to tell Schultheis what you think of his disgusting, inflammatory comments. We'll share your comments with him, with leaders in his party in Colorado, and with the media: http://www.ProgressNowColorado.org/SchultheisMY RESPONSE: I disagree with what you say, but I will defend your right to say it. However, where's the beef? The previous president spent trillions of dollars on wars that were based on lies and did nothing to prevent future terrorist attacks. This president is opening up international cooperation and global awareness--the only way to fight global terrorism. If you are not referring to the terrorist attack, then may I say that, on the contrary, Bush was directing this country into bankruptcy and fruitless, useless wars, inviting more terrorist reprisals. Obama has already pulled our economy out of that nosedive and back on track. Just look at your 401K statements to see this. Message to my congresspeople.
I could not get through on the phones. I want you to support the public option. The CEO of United Health care gets $57,000 an hour--the government bureaucrat who would decide if I could get a treatment makes $57,000 a year. United Health and other health care insurances will not cover me because I have preexisting conditions. The public option would allow me to have health care I could not get anywhere. \ In any other developed nation (except China), health care is a right! Why is it not a right here?!? Our small businesses compete on the world stage with a huge, 100 ton handicap when they have to shoulder health care costs directly and no other businesses from any other nation (including China) have those costs! This is unfair to the American business community and will drive our economy to the ground. Further, please look at Australia's malpractice system. This is a fair system, providing only economic damages--not crippling punitive damages. Once malpractice has been determined, the courts have experts tell the medical practitioner (and the rest of the medical community)what to do to prevent the problem from occurring again. This plain, common sense approach would save enough money and lower health costs enough to pay for the public option. | | Saturday, September 19th, 2009 | | 10:13 am |
Health care meeting Monday 28th.
Hi, Diana Degette's health care meeting on Saturday Sept 12 was not accessible. The staff did not know about any accessible entrances, there was no wheelchair seating, no interpretors, no volunteers to read to or to help the blind, no large print, no braille, no hearing aid infrastructure. We were quite upset about this and asked for another, accessible meeting. And her staff got back with me. So we are meeting with her at her offices in Denver on Monday Sept 28 at 2 pm. I need to know by the 23rd who is coming and what accommodations (interpretor, mobility, large print, etc) need to be made. Please send this to everyone you know who could come (I told her staff that the disabled community is extensive, proud, and active--and she ignores us at her peril--so it would really help if people came to this!) Also, we need to come with prepared statements on health care. Her explanations and issue positions on health care are at <http://degette.house.gov/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=803&itemid=241>. Please contact me at deenalarsen at yahoo.com to RSVP. Please pass this on to any Congressional District 1 folks who may want to attend--and have them RSVP to me by the 23rd so that we can set up an appropriate venue and let people know exactly where to show up. Thanks very much!!!! | | Monday, September 14th, 2009 | | 9:05 pm |
The Powers That Be Are Going to Take Away MORE pain meds!@!
So here is my response: Please, let us consumers make this choice. You allow cigarettes, which kill people, and yet will not allow these drugs which save people from pain and help them be productive citizens???!?!?!?! Before taking these choices off the market, ask yourself what you would do if you were in chronic pain. Imagine being hit by a hammer every 5 seconds all the time, day and night. And then see if you can live with your decision to deny someone relief from this hell. ACTION ALERT: Join APF in Urging the FDA to Protect the Rights of People with Pain - 1) Sign Petition and 2) Send Your Comments to the Public Docket! ACTION ONE: SIGN OUR PETITION The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is considering advice from its Advisory Committee that would eliminate all prescription acetaminophen combination medications (like Vicodin, Percocet). In addition, they are recommending taking the 500 mg (extra strength) dose of acetaminophen (the medicine in Tylenol) off store shelves and make it available only by prescription. These changes could negatively affect people suffering from pain who rely on these medicines every day. Act now and sign petition! Our position is simple: We can address the problem of harmful overuse of acetaminophen by conducting a major and sustained public education program about the risks and safe use of acetaminophen and by better labeling of medicines that contain acetaminophen. Taking products off the market is over-reacting and can be harmful to millions of people who rely on these medicines for effective pain management. The deadline for signing the petition is September 27th —don’t delay, sign today! ACTION TWO: SUBMIT YOUR COMMENTS DIRECTLY TO THE FDA The American Pain Foundation has joined forces with other pain advocacy organizations to create an Acetaminophen Task Force to study the FDA Advisory Committee’s recommendations. The Pain Care Forum’s Acetaminophen Task Force produced comprehensive statements of concerns and recommendations about the FDA Recommendations. Please read the documents linked below and compose your own comments to the FDA. There is just a brief window of opportunity to respond. The FDA is accepting comments up to September 30th. Respond to the FDA NOW: http://www.regulations.gov/search/Regs/home.html#submitComment?=0900006480968c1aFor additional information: Click here to read APF’s position statement on the FDA recommendations for acetaminophen combined medications and over-the-counter acetaminophen medications. Click here to read the task force’s concerns about the FDA’s recommendations regarding prescription acetaminophen combined medications. Click here to read the task force’s concerns about the FDA’s recommendations regarding over-the-counter acetaminophen medications. Letter to Red Rocks about wheelchair seating swiping.
Hi, I have been up to Red Rocks once--and only once--since I have been confined to a wheelchair. We had carefully gotten the front row seats, but a scalper had re-sold our tickets. When we complained, we were told that we would have to go to the back. We got up to the back a half an hour later (as we had to go all the way around and I am not that fast uphill and we had to rely on the kindness of strangers to push my chair). Then we were assaulted with cigarette smoke from smokers deliberately smoking in the back rows--despite many signs. The security people did nothing. I had a bad asthma attack and an ambulance medic was called in to me--and we had to leave about half way through the show. I, personally, will never forgive Red Rocks. I will never go to a show there again. However, I firmly believe that disabled people deserve the right to enjoy a show just as much as anyone else. I understand that the nature of the theater does not allow middle wheelchair/disabled seating. However, shows could do a much better job of ensuring that the back of the theater is smoke free and actually usable for handicapped people. I would also like to offer a solution to this problem. Simply designate handicapped parking close by the handicapped seats, and require that patrons who are using these seats be parked in handicapped parking. Note this requirement on everything. Most handicapped folks do have a handicapped permit. If the person does not have a handicapped permit, then they would have to provide identification along with their ticket. In fact, make it a requirement that each of the tickets in the first few rows be assigned to a person and not be re-assignable. Security or the ticket checkers can then check ids and tickets for these rows when the people show their tickets for the events. I put this in a friend's journal, but wanted to share:
I've found that love and healthy relationships only happen when the people involved: Respect each other and enjoy each other's company--without demanding change. At the very least, like themselves and are comfortable being alone--they don't ****NEED**** the other person to ful-FILL themselves. Invest energy, thought, and souls into communicating honestly with each other. Are committed to growing themselves. Are committed to supporting each other's true growth. Laugh together. Mind you, I have found this because I have found my love. I didn't know it before... | | Monday, June 29th, 2009 | | 9:33 pm |
